Purpose and Objectives: Research has shown that the use of demonstration gardens in Extension is an effective teaching tool, provides meaningful volunteer opportunities, and facilitates the development of community partnerships (Glen et al., 2014). However, for many Extension faculty, developing a demonstration garden or renovating one that already exists can prove to be a daunting task with little to no training available to meet their professional development needs. This IST will provide faculty with the knowledge and skills they will need to: assess the feasibility of installing a demonstration garden; define the purpose of the demonstration garden; develop a landscape design plan; manage volunteer wants, needs and challenging personalities; and collaborate with external agencies and municipalities to develop demonstration gardens in their community.

This training is intended for Horticulture/FFL Agents, Master Gardener Program Coordinators, and the like to share with them tools that will enable them to develop and teach landscape design workshops to their volunteer base. As a result, agents and volunteers will be empowered to design functioning, educational demonstration gardens under the direction of the agent. Participants will be provided several PowerPoints and handouts to use to teach their clientele and will also have the opportunity for field experiences in demonstration gardens in St. Johns and Marion County.

There are 2 sessions:

  • Session 1: UF/IFAS Extension St. Johns County – June 20, 2019
  • Session 2: UF/IFAS Extension Marion County – July 23, 2019
