Embrace Tranquility

Celebrating Garden Meditation Day

For gardeners the springtime is a whirlwind of activity. From tending to our own yards to exploring numerous plant festivals and sales, life can become a rush. That is why I was so encouraged to see that we celebrate National Garden Meditation Day in May. Every May 3rd, we're all encouraged to pause our busy routines and find solace in the sanctuary of a garden.

As I embraced this day of reflection, I found myself drawn to the serene atmosphere of my garden. The last cool evening of spring was the ideal backdrop to shed the worries of the day and find myself in the present moment. Thankfully, I've created a calming space within my landscape, so the practice of garden meditation is just steps away. Creating your own tranquil oasis involves incorporating several key elements.

Water — Water can bring stillness, movement, or reflection to a garden space. The sound of flowing water is naturally soothing. A small tabletop fountain or a larger version can bring the sound of water to the landscape. When choosing a fountain, be sure to listen to the splash it makes so you can select the most soothing sound to your ears. An easier water element that can be added is a reflecting pool. It can be as simple as a stylish container filled with water to mirror the sky and the surrounding foliage.

Paths — Curving paths or walkways create a relaxed effect in the garden. Meandering trails offer a contrast to the rigid lines of urban environments, inviting visitors to unwind as they stroll. Incorporating textured materials like gravel, crushed shell, or granite not only enhances the visual appeal, but also produces a soothing sound under foot.

Life — Fostering life within the garden adds a dynamic element to the meditative experience. By selecting plants that attract wildlife such as songbirds, butterflies, and pollinators, you can create a vibrant ecosystem within your backyard. Vertical layering—the intentional placement of flora of varying heights—makes the garden more welcoming to an array of visitors.

Seating — The importance of comfortable seating cannot be overstated. Whether it's a cozy bench nestled amidst plants or a reclining chair strategically placed to catch the evening sun, prioritizing comfort allows you to fully immerse yourself in the moment of meditation. Be creative in your choices, but remember comfort is the ultimate goal.

National Garden Meditation Day serves as a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature. So, take a moment to step into your garden, embrace the stillness, and let nature's beauty soothe your soul.
