Rock Gardens

An old-time favorite, rock gardens generally have very good drainage and create a hot dry microclimate, making them perfect for drought-loving bedding plants, ornamental grasses, and succulents. In Florida, limestone is the rock of choice. Use large rocks as the foundation, using their shape to your advantage; some make great seats, while others have depressions perfect for planting or a natural birdbath. Fill gaps between large rocks with smaller stones or gravel, and then add soil to create planting areas.
