The six to twelve inch long\u00a0<em>lanceolate<\/em>\u00a0leaves are\u00a0<em>deciduous<\/em>, and spirally arranged. The flowers are dark red, 1\/2 to 2 inches in diameter, with an unpleasant smell. The fruit is a large yellow-green\u00a0<em>berry<\/em>\u00a0two to six inches long.
