Leaves are\u00a0<em>opposite<\/em>\u00a0with three to five lobes. They are unequally\u00a0<em>serrate<\/em>, and three to six inches across.\u00a0<em>Petioles<\/em>\u00a0are pink-red and leaves turn red in fall. Red flowers appear on drooping\u00a0<em>racemes<\/em>\u00a0in the spring. The one to three inch fruits are double\u00a0<em>samaras<\/em>, which occur in clusters on slender stalks, and ripen soon after the flowers fade.
