The&nbsp;<em>simple<\/em>, dark green, leathery leaves have an&nbsp;<em>alternate<\/em>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<em>whorled<\/em>&nbsp;arrangement with&nbsp;<em>serrate<\/em>&nbsp;<em>margins<\/em>. Attractive flowers appear on the ends of branches in fall or winter and are solitary or clustered. They may possess few or many&nbsp;<em>petals<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>stamens<\/em>.
