They are\u00a0<em>ovate<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>lanceolate<\/em>\u00a0in shape, often with prominent veins, and can be solid green or colorfully striped. Irregularly shaped yellow to orange to red flowers are borne in\u00a0<em>spikes<\/em>.
