Florida Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) assist UF/IFAS Extension agents by providing research-based, horticultural education to Florida residents.

In 2025, 3,556 volunteers gave 377,473 hours of their time in 58 Florida counties. This equates to more than $12 million provided to Florida’s economy.

Master Gardener Volunteers typically assist in a variety of projects, including:

  • Answering questions at plant help desks
  • Giving landscaping and gardening workshops at public libraries
  • Building demonstration gardens
  • Assisting with community gardens
  • Teaching youth programs and working with school gardens

In 2025, MGVs served 274,210 Florida citizens through plant clinics, events and community gardens.

UF/IFAS Extension Florida Master Gardener Volunteer Program 2025 Annual Report

The Florida Master Gardener Volunteer Program trains participants using the latest science-based gardening practices developed by the University of Florida. Certified volunteers extend UF/IFAS Extension’s reach by sharing this knowledge within their communities, helping to conserve natural resources and improve quality of life. In 2025, the program achieved significant statewide impact – volunteer engagement increased, resulting in more service hours, higher full-time employee equivalency, greater monetary value of volunteer contributions, and expanded participation in continuing education.

  • There are 3,556 Master Gardener Volunteers in 58 of Florida’s 67 counties.
  • There are 490 new Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs). New Master Gardener Volunteers are trained in the counties where they will serve.
  • In 2025, Florida Master Gardener Volunteers donated $12.5 million worth of time to the citizens of Florida. Current estimations place the value of a Florida volunteer at $33 an hour.
  • Master Gardener Volunteers served 274,210 clientele through plant clinics, events and community gardens.
  • 41,354 hours of education were provided to volunteers in 2025. Each Master Gardener Volunteer received a minimum of 10 hours of continued education.
  • 377,473 hours of time were volunteered in 2025. Active Master Gardener Volunteers donated an average of 100 or more hours each.
  • The hours donated by MGVs would equal the work of 181 full-time employees.
