Greenhouse Covering Materials

Many gardeners grow plants in backyard greenhouses. Greenhouses can be covered in glass, fiberglass, polycarbonate, or plastic.

You'll need to plan which material you want to use before you build the frame, because the frame and the covering need to be compatible.

Today there are many greenhouse covering options. Glass is the traditional covering. It's attractive and can last a long time. However, glass breaks easily and can be expensive to build with.

Fiberglass is lightweight and strong. Remember to buy only high-grade fiberglass. Rigid double-layer plastic sheets of acrylic or polycarbonate provide energy-saving, strong greenhouse coverings. Plastic film is inexpensive, and can be attached to lightweight frames.
